Every year on March 21, the world observes the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The UN General Assembly established this day in 1966 to commemorate the 69 civilians killed by police gunfire during a peaceful protest against apartheid (racial segregation policy) in Sharpeville, South Africa in 1960. The day before this anniversary, migrant and human rights organizations will hold an anti-discrimination rally and march at Gwanghwamun.
Date, Time, and Location
- Date and time: Sunday, March 20, 2:00 PM
- Location: 136 Sejong-daero, Jung-gu, Seoul (in front of the Gwanghwamun Finance Center)
- Getting there: Seoul Subway Line 5, Gwanghwamun Station, Exit 5
What the Rally Is About
This rally is organized jointly by migrant and human rights groups. There are two core messages:
- To make it clear to society that racial discrimination is a form of violence.
- To call for the passage of the Equality Act (Anti-Discrimination Act) in Korea, a law that has been debated for many years.
A march will follow the rally.
