About MAP and Refugee News
Migration to Asia Peace (MAP)
Migration to Asia Peace (MAP, 아시아평화를향한이주) is a non-profit organisation that started in Korea in 2015. In Asia, many people have had to leave the places where they lived because of conflict, poverty, persecution and development. MAP brings attention and action to this problem of forced migration. It helps forced migrants, such as refugees, internally displaced people and victims of human trafficking, decide their own future safely and freely. MAP also works so that migration does not become a new conflict in the country where people settle, and so that it is peaceful and good for everyone. (MAP’s philosophy, in Korean)
MAP hopes for a world where every person can dream of a future in safety and dignity, and decide it freely. The values that matter to MAP are diversity, community, peace, creativity, cooperation and social change.
MAP’s work includes the following. The full history is on the MAP history page (in Korean).
- MAP Refugee News: daily life information and news in languages refugees can understand (started in 2019).
- Peace Board: a project that explains information needed for life in Korea in videos in many languages (2023).
- Dialogue with Refugees: a programme where refugees and citizens meet and talk directly (started in 2019 as the Human Book Library with Refugees, under its current name since 2023).
- We Peace Korean Language School: online Korean classes, run from 2022 to February 2025.
- Good Samaritan scholarship programme (started in 2021) and support for refugee children (started in 2019)
- Dear Mommy: emotional support for parents and caregivers of refugee children (started in 2024).
- Peace Academy: a training programme for people who help refugees (2023 to 2024).
Since 2016, MAP has published an annual report (in Korean) every year. It shows the year’s activities and how donations were used.
MAP Refugee News
The goal of MAP Refugee News is to help refugees get the information they need most, on time, in a language they can understand. It covers residence and refugee policy, medical care and health, daily life, human rights, education and job opportunities, and the stories of refugees starting a new life in Korea. (About Refugee News, in Korean)
Refugees take part in every step, from planning and research to editing, translation and distribution. The news reaches people through this website, text messages, Facebook, WhatsApp and local community leaders.
This website (refugeelifekorea.org) runs in 8 languages: Korean, English, French, Arabic, Amharic, Burmese, Russian and Persian. How we write, translate and review articles is set out in the Editorial Guide. The AI chatbot, which answers from the site’s articles, is explained in detail in About the chatbot.
Production model
MAP Refugee News is made by human editors who write the articles, AI that helps with production, and human reviewers who check the result (Human Editor + AI-Assisted Production + Human Reviewer). AI only assists: people always check and decide what is published and how it is corrected (human-in-the-loop).
- Editors: they check government announcements and official sources, write the articles in Korean, and decide whether to publish them.
- AI support: AI adds easy-to-read explanations and summaries, and helps recheck official pages to see whether a policy has changed. We also run an AI chatbot that answers from the site’s articles.
- Translation: AI translates each Korean article into 7 languages, and reviewers who speak each language check and correct it (machine translation post-editing, MTPE). This is how we can share the same information quickly in 8 languages.
- Review based on risk: for new articles on topics where wrong information can cause harm, such as Asylum & Status, Rights & Law, Health & Medical and Mental Health, we publish only translations that a reviewer has checked. Other articles are published first, marked “AI translation”, and reviewed afterwards.
- Reader feedback: editors and reviewers check the comments sent through “Translation fix” and “Get involved” below each article, and make changes.
