Privacy policy
MAP Refugee News (refugeelifekorea.org) is run by Migration to Asia Peace (MAP, 아시아평화를향한이주). You can use the site without an account or sign-in, and it never asks for your name or contact details. This page explains what the site keeps, where, and for how long.
AI chatbot conversations
When you ask the AI chatbot a question, the following is saved:
- your question, the answer and the articles the answer cites
- the words the chatbot searched for on the site and the articles it read
- the language, the page you asked from and how long the answer took
- your country (a country code estimated from your internet connection), whether you used a phone, and your browser language setting
- a random conversation number made for each browser tab (it disappears when you close the tab)
- your answer to “Was this answer helpful?” and any comment you add
Your IP address, name, phone number and account details are not saved. Please do not enter your name, phone number, foreign resident registration number or address. Phone numbers, email addresses, ID and passport numbers and card numbers typed into a question or comment are removed automatically before the conversation is saved.
Saved conversations are used to check that answers are correct, to find information the site is missing and write new guides, and for research on giving information in many languages. Anything that could identify a person is removed before research results are published.
Answers are written by Claude, an AI made by Anthropic. Your question and the earlier turns of the conversation are sent to Anthropic to produce the answer. Under Anthropic’s commercial API terms, this content is not used to train its AI.
Feedback and participation forms
- “Was this page helpful?” under an article: only the article address, language, your answer and the reason you picked are saved.
- Participation form (information requests, error reports, ideas): what you write, and contact details if you choose to leave them, are saved in a private workspace (GitHub) that only the MAP editorial team can see. Contact details are used only to reply to you.
- Edit suggestions: the text you propose is saved in the same private workspace for an editor to review.
Information stored in your browser
Your text size, chosen language, dismissed notices and table-of-contents setting are stored only in your own browser (localStorage) and are not sent to MAP. The site uses no advertising cookies. Google Analytics uses a cookie (_ga) for visit statistics (see external services below).
The site counts visitors with a random number that it creates for each browser and stores in that browser (localStorage). Only this number and the date of the visit are saved in MAP’s Cloudflare database; your IP address, the pages you read and any other information that could identify you are not saved with it. This record is used only to calculate the numbers of visitors today and in total shown at the bottom of the site.
Page views are saved only as a total per page address and date, with no link to the number above or to anything else that could identify you. A page opened several times in one day in the same browser is counted once; the list of pages already counted that day stays in your browser (localStorage).
Outside services
- Cloudflare delivers the site and may keep access records for a short time for security and error checks. Chatbot records are stored in a Cloudflare database in the Asia-Pacific region. The servers that produce the chatbot’s answers run in the United States.
- Anthropic writes the chatbot’s answers.
- Google Analytics collects visit statistics, such as which pages are read and how much. IP addresses are shortened before processing, and ad personalization and Google signals are turned off. If you delete or block cookies in your browser, you are not included in the statistics.
- Microsoft: when you press “Listen”, the article text is sent to Microsoft’s speech service to be read aloud.
- jsDelivr, Google Fonts and cdnjs supply fonts and icons, and receive connection information when they do.
Transfer abroad
When you use the chatbot, the following information is transferred abroad.
- Information transferred: the question you enter in the chatbot and the earlier questions and answers in the same conversation. Automatic removal of personal information applies only to the records MAP keeps, so Anthropic receives what you entered exactly as typed.
- Country of transfer: United States
- When and how: sent over an encrypted connection each time you submit a question.
- Recipients: Anthropic PBC (generates the answers; contact: https://privacy.claude.com), Cloudflare, Inc. (runs the chatbot servers; contact: https://www.cloudflare.com/privacypolicy/)
- Purpose of use: generating answers, operating the service, preventing misuse
- Retention period: Anthropic deletes the questions and answers it receives within 30 days. However, conversations that Anthropic’s automated checks judge to violate its usage policy are kept for up to 2 years.
- How to refuse and what follows: if you do not use the chatbot, nothing is transferred abroad. You can read every article on the site without using the chatbot.
Retention and deletion
Chatbot conversations and feedback are kept for up to two years and then deleted. To have a conversation of yours deleted, email refugeelifekorea@mapcast.org with the date and time and what you asked. Because conversations are saved without names, these details are how we find and delete it.
Terms of use
Information on this site and from the chatbot is general guidance, not legal, medical or immigration advice. Rules and amounts change, so confirm anything important with the Immigration Contact Center (1345) or the office responsible. In an emergency, call 119 (fire, ambulance) or 112 (police). Links to other organisations’ websites are provided for convenience.
