What Is a Human Library?
At this event, refugees who have left their home countries and are building new lives in Korea become the living books. You will first watch a short video about the connections and relationships they have found in an unfamiliar land, and then hear deeper, more personal stories directly from the guest speakers.
World Refugee Day and Why This Event Matters
Every year on June 20th, the world marks World Refugee Day. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2000 and has been observed annually since 2001. The date comes from the original “African Refugee Day.”
MAP is running a campaign around this day under the theme “Together We Can: Together We Heal, Learn and Shine.” The Human Library is one of the events that is part of this campaign.
A Look Back at Session 1 (June 20th)
Last Sunday’s first session brought together 4 living books and 14 readers. Here are a few reflections people shared afterward.
From the living books (refugee participants)
“There are people who work hard for us, and we are not alone, that is what I felt. Since coming to Korea, I had never felt this way before. A few of the questions the readers asked were especially moving, and those questions even gave me hope that I can get through these hardships.”
“I hope someday we can meet again, and if today we talked about the pain that comes with being a refugee, I hope that day we can just share happy stories.”
From the readers (participants)
“I will keep thinking about how we can stand together and act in solidarity in the local community, and I will pray for you.”
“I am so glad I came to this event today. It was a precious time that let me understand and feel, really feel in my heart, what I had only ever read about refugees in words before.”
