Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) is an integrated support approach that combines mental health treatment, counseling, and social support for refugees who are experiencing psychological difficulties due to war, persecution, or forced displacement. In South Korea, the nonprofit organization Migration for Asia Peace (MAP) runs this program for refugees living in Korea.

Who Can Apply

Any refugee living in South Korea who is experiencing difficulties related to mental health is welcome to apply. Support is available for adults as well as children and teenagers.

Some examples of difficulties that qualify for support:

  • Stress, anxiety, and depression
  • Trauma (including post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Sleep disorders
  • Schizophrenia
  • Alcohol dependency
  • Developmental delays in children

If what you are going through is not on this list, please do not worry. Through an individual consultation, MAP will work with you to figure out what kind of support you need.

What Support Is Available

After you apply, an individual consultation takes place, and the support that is right for you is decided from there.

  • Referral to psychiatric or counseling services, and help with treatment costs: MAP connects you with specialist medical institutions or counselors and also provides financial assistance with treatment expenses.
  • Interpretation support: If your Korean is limited, that is completely fine. Interpretation is provided throughout consultations and medical appointments.
  • Emergency response: If a crisis arises, MAP responds quickly and connects you to the appropriate medical institution.
  • Referral to social welfare, legal, housing, and education services: MAP links you to relevant organizations so that everyday difficulties affecting your mental health can be addressed alongside your care.
  • Family and community counseling: Counseling support is available not only for you personally, but also for your family members or close community.
  • Tailored psychosocial support: Support is provided with your individual situation and cultural background in mind.
