On Monday, May 20, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Gwacheon Citizens’ Hall, a press conference was held calling for the withdrawal of the Ministry of Justice (MOJ)‘s proposed amendment to the Immigration Control Act. Read it here: https://buly.kr/1n1wYrc The statement argues that the new law the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) is seeking to enact is harmful. In summary, the bill would: 1) allow detention (confinement in a foreigner detention facility) for a base period of 18 months, extendable to a maximum of 36 months; 2) allow re-detention of a foreign national after detention has been lifted; and 3) establish a new body called the “Committee for Review of Detained Foreigners,” which critics argue would lack meaningful authority.

MAP also joined the 2024 World Refugee Day joint statement, “We Condemn the Cuts to the Refugee Living Allowance Budget.” Read it here: https://buly.kr/15Mudcx The refugee living allowance program is the single system that provides financial support to help asylum seekers (refugee applicants) meet their basic living needs. However, the government cut the 2024 refugee living allowance budget by 20%. Please read the statement to see what specific problems were identified.
